8th Sydney Latin American Film Festival

Experience the sights and sounds of Latin America. See the diverse culture of Latin America in celluloid. Enjoy the 8th Sydney Latin American Film Festival.

The festival will span 12 days and two Sydney venues. Treat yourself to an unforgettable and eye-opening movie experience. Featuring films, documentaries and short films from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, the United States and Australia, the festival is set to entertain and delight audiences everywhere.

This year’s Festival opens with the moving and hilariously lovable Brazilian film The Clown (O Palhalco). Tlatelolco, Summer of 68 from Mexico, is another must-see. This fast-paced historical drama depicts the massacre which overshadowed the country’s hosting of the 1968 Olympics.

Making its Sydney debut is the Academy Award-winning documentary, Inocente. Audiences are invited on a guided tour of the cosmovision from a Mayan perspective in Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth. The life of Argentina’s national folk treasure, Mercedes Sosa, is brought to the big screen in a feature documentary.

Peru delivers an award-winning drama The Cleaner, as well as the documentary on foodie culture, Peru Sabe: Cuisine as an Agent of Social Change (don’t miss the degustation).

Cuba offers Melaza, a resilient love story set in a forgotten sugar town. Colombia shines with a hard-hitting coming-of-age drama La Playa DC, set on the streets of Bogota. Chile boasts of a controversial tale of unholy meddling by the Pinochet regime in The Passion of Michelangelo. Don’t miss the first feature film from Panama, Route of the Moon, a robust coming-of-old-age road movie. In a year of many firsts, SLAFF presents an animated feature film, a fun family movie of pirate proportions; come aboard the Esperanza and discover Selkirk, The Real Robinson Crusoe!

Aside from the film screenings, there will be a number of special events including fiestas, fundraisers, food tastings and Q&A sessions with visiting filmmakers.

The Sydney Latin American Film Festival has been going strong since 2006. Enjoy the magic of the movies and help a good cause. Proceeds from ticket sales are donated to social justice, environmental and community development organisations in Latin America and Australia.

Get ready for cinema’s finest offerings. Catch the Sydney Latin American Film Festival from September 4 to 15, 2013 at Dendy Opera Quays and Bankstown Arts Centre. Both venues are just a short drive from our Boutique Hotel in Chippendale Sydney.
